What Can Be Planted in Your Florida Garden
The month of March brings with it warmer weather, anticipation for the beginning of spring, and a whole host of plants that you can add to your central Florida garden. Varieties of vegetables, palms, flowers, and herbs all thrive here as spring rolls in, so now is a perfect time to really dig in and make preparations.
If vegetable gardening is your cup of tea, then March is a great time to plant and/or transplant warm and cold-season veggies in your Florida garden.
Warm-weather vegetables to plant in March:
- Beans (lima, bush, and pole)
- Southern peas
- Sweet potatoes
- Summer squash
Cold-season veggies that still do well here in March include:
- Chinese cabbage
- Onion (multiplier & bunching)
- Winter squash
- Swiss chard
March is the time to replace those dying winter annuals with new ones. Try angelonia, dusty miller, gazania, and violas for color now and through the summer!
You can also plant some bulbs now for dazzling summer displays—try canna, caladium, dahlia, and gloriosa for a show-stopping scene.
Finally, once your azaleas and camellias have fully bloomed, prune them back for shape and fertilize.
March is a great time to plant a small butterfly Florida garden full of culinary and aromatic herbs! Many herbs do great in central Florida’s climate, including basil, thyme, oregano, mint, and rosemary. Level up and throw some edible garlic in there too!
You may be tempted to prune or fertilize your palms in March, but try to wait until April if you can.
Don’t Forget About the Frost
While many parts of Florida are well past their last frost date by March, there are some parts, especially in the north, that still see frosts throughout March. If you’ve planted or transplanted seedlings to your garden and a cold snap hits, be sure to cover sensitive plants and seedlings with some type of cover to prevent damage.
